Taika Waititi’s Akira versus John Wick on May 21, 2021

According to Deadline, Warner Bros has moved Akira, directed by Thor Ragnarock’s Taika Waititi, from a May 14, 2021 release date to May 21, 2021 which will put it head-to-head with John Wick: Chapter Four.

The movie is based on the very popular Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Katsuhiro Otomo and was introduced to U.S. audiences under Marvel’s Epic Comics imprint.

Otomo wrote and directed the 1988 animated movie “Akira” with the logline: “A secret military project endangers Neo-Tokyo when it turns a biker gang member into a rampaging psychic psychopath that only two teenagers and a group of psychics can stop.” The movie became an instant cult classic and inspired both Ghost in the Shell and The Matrix.

As a fan of both directors, deciding which movie to see on Friday, May 21, 2021 will now be hugely difficult choice. I have to wonder why Warner Brothers made that decision!
